A Historic Shift: Solar Energy Surpasses Nuclear Power in the EU

A Record Month for Solar Energy

In June 2025, photovoltaic energy in the European Union reached a new high, surpassing nuclear power with a share of 22.1 percent of electricity generation, compared to 21.8 percent for nuclear energy. This is the first time solar power has represented the largest single source of electricity within the EU. Approximately 45.4 terawatt-hours of solar energy were generated, compared to 44.7 terawatt-hours from nuclear power.

Records and Growth Figures

At least 13 EU countries recorded new monthly highs in solar power generation in June. Photovoltaics increased by an impressive 22 percent compared to the same month last year. This growth highlights the expansion of renewable energies in Europe and suggests increased political support.

Importance for Investors

This shift is particularly relevant for investors as it underscores the growing importance of renewable energies in the EU. The increasing share of solar energy not only influences the energy market but could also impact prices and investment decisions.

Wind Energy and the Future Energy Mix

Although wind energy, with a share of 15.8 percent, remains behind solar and nuclear power, it remains an essential part of the European energy mix. Overall, there is a clear trend towards renewable energies as the dominant source of energy in Europe.

These developments signal a significant change in European energy policy in favor of sustainable technologies. This presents opportunities for investors in green energy projects as well as for companies in the cleantech sector.
