Photovoltaic Systems 2025: A Profitable Investment for Homeowners

The purchase of a photovoltaic (PV) system for single-family homes is more economically attractive than ever in 2025, primarily due to the price decline in PV systems and battery storage as well as the increased grid electricity prices. This results in a faster amortization of the investment in a PV system with storage compared to earlier years.

Costs and Economic Feasibility

A typical solar system with storage for an average single-family house (approximately 8 kWp) costs between €17,000 and €21,000, including battery storage. For smaller systems (e.g., 5 kWp), the costs without storage are around €5,000 to €8,000, and with storage, total between approximately €9,000 and €16,000.

The combination of falling acquisition costs and rising electricity prices enables households to cover a significant portion of their electricity needs themselves – often achieving up to 80 percent self-sufficiency through self-consumption via battery storage.

According to calculations by Solarwatt, a four-person household with an approximately 10 kW system plus storage can save around €1,400 per year on electricity costs, which significantly improves the economic viability.

Subsidies

Various federal states and municipalities offer funding programs such as low-interest loans or investment grants for PV systems with storage, further reducing investment costs.

Market Development

Despite the good economic viability, the private expansion of photovoltaic systems in Germany has declined in the first half of 2025 – partly due to fallen electricity prices and changed feed-in regulations without compensation in the event of oversupply in the grid. Nevertheless, self-supply through PV remains economically sensible.

In summary, it can be said that the purchase of a PV system for the home today is more financially advantageous than ever, thanks to lower prices for modules and batteries, as well as high savings potential in electricity procurement – particularly if self-consumption is optimized and funding opportunities are utilized. This makes photovoltaic systems a worthwhile investment from both an economic and ecological perspective for private homeowners in Germany in 2025.
