Volkswagen Takes the Lead in the European E-Automobile Market 2025

Volkswagen’s Dominance in 2025

In 2025, Volkswagen significantly dominated the European E-automobile market, overtaking Tesla as the market leader. In the first half of 2025, Volkswagen sold approximately 193,000 electric vehicles worldwide, a 14.3% increase compared to the previous year. Particularly in Europe, sales rose by over 70%, allowing VW to clearly surpass Tesla. Models such as the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 occupy three of the top five spots for the most registered electric cars in Europe.

Global Deliveries and Growth

Globally, Volkswagen was able to increase its deliveries of battery electric vehicles (BEV) by almost 50% in the first half of the year to around 465,500 vehicles. The share of pure electric cars in total deliveries rose to 11%, up from 7% previously. In Europe, BEV deliveries nearly doubled with an increase of around 89%. New models such as the VW ID.7 Tourer as well as the Audi Q6 e-tron and Škoda Elroq significantly contributed to this growth.

Market Share Loss for Tesla

In contrast, Tesla recorded a significant drop in sales in Europe: sales fell by over 30% in the first half of the year, particularly stark in April with only around 8,000 units. Overall, Tesla’s market share in the EU shrank while the demand for electric vehicles rose to a market share of over 15%. However, Tesla did not benefit and continued to lose ground to competitors like BYD.

Impacts on Investors

This development has direct implications for investor interests: Volkswagen is perceived as a leading player in the European E-market, strengthening confidence in the future viability of the German group. The strong growth potential from new model series and a clear positioning against competitors increases attractiveness for investors. Tesla’s weakness phase could lead to a reassessment of the company while VW expands its market position.

Overall, Volkswagen’s leadership signals a sustainable trend reversal in favor of German manufacturers in the important European electric mobility market – a decisive signal for both investors and the strategic direction of the industry.
